HOUSTON--- The University of Houston tennis team was nothing short of dominant on Friday, as the Cougars combined to go 6-1 in singles competition while all four doubles squads advanced to the winners’ bracket on day one of the Cougar Classic.

Freshman Tina Rupert and junior Charlotte Phillips were two of the day’s best players, as Rupert defeated Texas State’s Eva Dench in straight sets (6-4, 6-0), while Phillips followed suit, handling Stephen F. Austin’s Kateryna Bugayenko, 6-2, 6-2.

Earlier in the day the two teamed up to defeat Stephen F. Austin’s Laura Servise and Rachel Pierce 8-4, in the opening round of doubles competition.

Senior Celia Fraser, sophomore Maria Andrea Cardenas, and junior Elena Kordolaimi also managed to take down their respective opponents in consecutive sets, as Fraser downed Lamar’s Anna Spengler 6-2, 6-3, while Cardenas beat Kansas’ Paulina Los, 6-3, 7-6 (4), and Kordolaimi defeated Stephen F. Austin’s Malena Gordo 7-6 (3), 6-0.

Sophomore Rocio Martin Fernandez also managed to win two consecutive sets, to pull off a come-from-behind victory over Maryland’s Cassandre Thebault, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2, in what was one of the more dramatic matches of the day.

"We have been working very hard over the last few weeks on raising our standard as far as competing goes,” said head coach Patrick Sullivan. “We felt that we hadn't valued our opportunities this fall as much as we should have and we really wanted to focus on making this final tournament of the semester on our home courts count."

“Obviously I'm very pleased with the results today, going 9-1 and a few points away from a perfect day against a very tough field. More than that, I'm happy with the way we competed in several tight matches and I am looking forward to continuing that tomorrow."
