Nov. 3, 2017

HOUSTON – The Houston Cougar Women’s Tennis team opened the inaugural River Oaks Country Club Collegiate Invitational with a doubles sweep over Texas, before falling to Rice in singles play on Friday.

The Cougars met the Longhorns to kick off the tournament at River Oaks Country Club, and Houston’s No. 1 doubles team of Tsveta Dimitrova and Sveva Mazzari rolled to an 8-1 victory over Anna Turati and Chelsea Crovetti.

Houston clinched the victory at the No. 2 doubles position, where Lauren Alter and Ana Glumac teamed to beat Tyler Duncum and Madison Cleff 8-2. With the victory already in hand, Constandena Nicolaou and Laura Bernardos combined to beat Armelle Cerdan and Kaja Ljubic 8-4 to pick up the sweep. Cerdan and Ljubic play for Stephen F. Austin, but were filling in for the Longhorns on Friday.

Action then turned to singles, where Alter picked up a victory over Rice’s Michaela Haet while playing at the No. 3 position. The sophomore controlled the entire match, taking the first set 6-4, before returning to win 6-2 in the second set.

Mazzari battled through Houston’s closest singles match of the afternoon while playing against Priya Niezgoda at the No. 2 singles position. Mazzari dropped the first set 6-3 before returning to even the match with a 6-3 win of her own in the second set. However, Niezgoda would claim the match with a 6-2 win in the third set.

At the No. 4 singles position, Glumac was also locked into a fight with Anna Bowtell. With the score tied at five in the first set, Bowtell was able to rally to win two straight games to take the set. The contest continued to play back-and-forth, and was again tied at five games apiece in the second set before Bowtell closed out the match 7-5, 7-5.

Also in singles play, Nicolaou fell to Savannah Durkin 7-5, 6-2, while Bernardos dropped her match to Sofie Moenster 6-3, 6-3.
