HOUSTON – The Houston Cougar Women’s Tennis team defeated Rice in doubles play and North Texas in singles action on the second day of the inaugural River Oaks Country Club Collegiate Invitational, on Saturday.
Competition on the second day began with doubles play, where the Cougars defeated the Owls 2-1. Tsveta Dimitrova and Sveva Mazzari gave Houston an early lead and remained undefeated at the No. 1 position in the tournament after defeating Priya Niezgoda and Anna Bowtell 8-1.
Houston clinched the match with an 8-5 victory for Lauren Alter and Ana Glumac over Fernanda Astete and Michaela Haet at the No. 2 doubles position. With the match in hand, the Cougar’s duo of Constandena Nicolaou and Laura Bernardos dropped a close match to Savannah Durkin and Sofie Moenster 8-6.
Play continued against the Mean Green in singles where Dimitrova earned a victory at the No. 1 position. Dimitrova defeated Minying Liang 6-3 in the first set, before clinching the match with a 6-4 win in set two.
At the No. 2 singles position, Mazzari opened her match with a 6-3 win in set one over Nidhi Surapaneni. The senior would best Surapaneni in the second set as well with a 6-2 victory to decide the match.
Alter picked up her second win of the tournament in singles play at the No. 3 singles position with a straight-set win over Aley Heczey. Alter rolled to a 6-2 win in the first set before closing the match out with a 6-3 score in the second set.
Glumac and Bernardos saw each of their singles matches pushed to three sets against the Mean Green. Glumac took the advantage with a 6-2 win in the first set, before Haruka Sasaki answered with a 6-4 win to even the match. Glumac regained the momentum in the third set and earned the victory 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
Bernardos fell behind early to Ivana Babic, dropping the first set 6-4 and then two early breaks in the second set to go down 4-1. However, Bernardos would battle back and respond with a 6-4 win in the second set, before taking the match with a 6-2 mark in the decisive set.
Nicolaou dropped a tough match, falling to Sille Tronberg at the No. 5 singles position. The opening set played to a tie-breaker, with Tronberg earning the advantage 7-6(1) before sealing the match with a 6-2 win in the second set.
The Cougars return to action for the final day of the invitational at 9 a.m., Sunday, when they face North Texas in doubles play, before meeting Texas in singles.
