Houston Wins River Oaks Doubles Title

HOUSTON – The Houston Cougar Women’s Tennis team won the doubles title at the River Oaks Country Club Collegiate Invitational with a victory over North Texas, while taking second in singles after defeating Texas, on Sunday.

Doubles play opened the final day of competition, where Houston’s third opponent of the weekend was the Mean Green. The Cougars’ team of Tsveta Dimitrova and Sveva Mazzari remained perfect on the weekend after an 8-4 victory over Nidi Surapaneni and Minying Liang.

The duo of Lauren Alter and Ana Glumac also completed a perfect weekend and helped push Houston’s overall doubles record to 3-0 after defeating Sille Tranberg and Aley Heczey 8-3. With the doubles point decided, Constandena Nicolaou and Laura Bernardos dropped a nail-biter to Ivana Babic and Haruka Sasaki 8-7 (3).

Houston won the doubles competition with its 3-0 record, while Rice finished 2-1, North Texas finished 1-2 and Texas posted an 0-3 record on the weekend.

Houston and the Longhorns met in singles play to close out competition at the invitational, where Dimitrova defeated Chelsea Crovetti at the No. 2 position. Dimitrova dropped just one game in the match and rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

Alter wrapped up a perfect 3-0 weekend with her straight-set victory over Tyler Duncum. Alter cruised to a 6-1 victory in the first set before closing out the match with a 6-3 mark in the second set.



Glumac fell behind early in her match with Kaja Ljubic, dropping the first set in a tie-breaker 7-6 (3). Glumac responded with a 6-3 win in the second set to even the score, and a back-and-forth third set played to a 5-5 tie. However, Glumac was able to rattle off wins in back-to-back games to take the third set 7-5.

Bernardos also fell behind in her singles match with Armelle Cerdan, dropping the first set 6-3. Bernardos captured all of the momentum in the second set, and didn’t drop a game with a 6-0 score to even the match. In the third set, Bernardos outlasted Cerdan 6-4 to seal the victory.

Nicolaou gave the Cougars their fifth singles win of the afternoon with a straight-set win over Madison Cleff at the No. 6 singles position. Nicolaou won the first set 6-3 and then claimed set two by a score of 6-1.

Mazzari dropped her singles match 6-3, 6-2 to Anna Turati at the No. 1 singles position.

As a team, the Cougars finished with a 2-1 record in singles play on the weekend and finished second in the tournament. Rice won singles play with a 3-0 mark, while North Texas finished 1-2 and Texas was 0-3.

The River Oaks Country Club Collegiate Invitational wrapped up fall play for the Cougars. Houston will open spring play in January, and the competition schedule will be released at a later date.
