HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team competed it first action of the fall on its home courts with a successful first day at the Cougar Fall Draw on Friday at John E. Hoff Courts.

On the singles side of the bracket, the Cougars fared well by going a combined 9-3 on the day with seniors Vicky Simpson and Jordan McCombs along with junior Neila Starratt leading the way by each winning both their matches during on Friday in Flight B of the singles portion of the event.

In Flight A of the singles draw, sophomores Joanna Kacprzyk and Laura Ring each open the day with a win - Kacprzyk winning her first round match 7-5, 6-2 while Ring defeated Sam Houston State's Giorgia Pozzan 6-2, 6-4. The pair could not continue their first round success later in the day as both fell in the second round.

Sophomore Lucy Forward posted a win in the consolidation round of the Flight A Singles bracket, downing SHSU's Eleonora Kuruc, 6-1, 5-7 (11-9).

The Cougars were also successful in the doubles side of the bracket, with the UH tandems of Simpson/Starratt, Wasson/Kacprzyk and Ring/Young all turning up winners.

The action will continue at the tournament at 9 a.m. on Saturday before the event concludes on Sunday.
