HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's tennis team kicks off the 2013 dual match season at 1 p.m., on Tuesday against Stephen F. Austin at the Galleria Tennis and Athletic Club.
The Patrick Sullivan era officially begins for the Houston Tennis program on Tuesday, as the first-year head coach will meet his former team. Sullivan, a native of Houston, turned the SFA program around in two short years, posting a 43-10 (.811) overall record while taking the Ladyjacks to their first-ever NCAA Tournament a year ago.
The Cougars return six of nine letterwinners from last season's squad that tallied a 14-8 overall record, marking the 10th straight winning season for the program.
Maja Kazimieruk is the lone returning senior on the squad and led the 2013 returners a year ago with a 14-5 record in dual singles play. The Poznan, Poland, native enters her final spring with a 64-34 (.653) overall singles record, including a 39-19 (.672) mark in dual play.
Celia Fraser returns for her junior season after claiming double-digit wins in dual singles play for the second straight season last spring with a 12-8 record at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Fraser ended fall tournament play with a bang, reeling off three straight wins at the Tennis Express Houston Open, including a win over Rice's Stephanie Nguyen in the flight championship.
Sophomores Liselot Koenen and Charlotte Phillips were both regulars in the lineup in their first season in the Scarlet and White in 2012, turning in impressive campaigns of 14-7 and 11-9, respectively.
Houston welcomes three newcomers to the fold this season in sophomore transfer Elena Kordolaimi and freshmen Rocio Martin Fernandez and Gabriella Jansson.
Kordolaimi, a native of Lamia, Greece, was the former top junior in her home country and spent her freshman season at Stephen F. Austin, where she claimed a 23-8 (.742) overall singles record, including a 17-6 mark during the spring season at the top three positions.
Rocio Martin Fernandez, a standout from Madrid, Spain, recently signed with the program and garnered a ranking of No. 44 in Spain's open division and No. 1204 in WTA's worldwide rankings, while Gabriella Jansson starred at nearby Cy-Fair High School.
