University of Houston defeats Rice in a cross town battle, 5-2
HOUSTON - The Houston Cougars have been plagued with injuries since before the
season began, but that didn't stop the Cougars from rising to the
challenge against their cross town rival Rice University. Having to
forfeit the #6 singles position because of injuries, the Cougars
started off a point down before a ball was even hit. But after a
sound performance in doubles by all 3 teams, the Cougars gained the
ever so important doubles point, and carried that momentum into
singles play. At #1 doubles, the duo of Sarah Borwell and Annie Rapp
romped Yasmin Fisher and Gerry Gonzales 8-1. At #3, Kailey Meisinger
and Jen Baccarani came up short with a close 8-6 loss to Judith
Hagedorn and Karen Chao. Karine Urbin and Sarah Flood clinched the
doubles point at #2 with an 8-6 victory over Erin Waters and Natalie
Briaud.
Jen Baccarani was the first Cougar to win a singles match with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over nnie Goodrich at the #4 position. Karine Urbin of Houston lost a close 7-5, 6-4 match to Judith Hagedorn at the #2 position. After losing the first set 1-6, Kailey Meisinger of Houston rallied back to a 6-0, 6-3 victory at the #3 position. Freshman Sarah Flood held off Yasmin Fisher at the #5 position 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Junior Sarah Borwell battled with Erin Waters of Rice and was victorious with a 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 win at #1. "I was very proud of the way my team competed today. They proved to themselves that even though we are low with numbers right now, we are capable of stepping up to these challenges. Everyone is trying to work out the kinks in their games, and I think everyone on this team fought those demons and won. It was a team effort all around. They became a better team today." The Cougars will host the Tigers of LSU Thursday, February 15th.
