HOUSTON – The Houston Cougar Women’s Tennis team plays their first American Athletic match of the year against the UConn Huskies on Friday, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. Following that match, the Cougars take on Northwestern State on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 11 a.m. Both matches will be held at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility.
Houston took down New Mexico State a week ago in a 7-0 sweep at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility. The Cougars swept doubles and didn’t lose a set throughout all of the singles matches. Sveva Mazzari remained undefeated in singles with a 6-3, 6-0 win.
Two days after defeating New Mexico State, the Cougars were handed their first loss on the season at the George R. Brown Tennis Center against Rice. After coming off an impressive win against Texas A&M, Rice defeated the Cougars 4-3 in an action-packed match. The women started out strong by taking the doubles point but would eventually lose four out of the six singles matches. Despite the loss, Houston still stands at 8-1 on the spring season heading into the weekend.
ABOUT THE HUSKIES
Connecticut comes into Houston on Friday with a 5-3 record, winning its latest match against Rutgers 5-2. The Huskies are led by senior Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva who boasts a 6-2 singles record and is undefeated in doubles this season. UConn is undefeated at home but has a 1-3 record when playing on the road.
ABOUT THE DEMONS
The Lady Demons will play UConn in Houston on Saturday before playing the Cougars on Sunday. Their last match was a 5-2 win against Texas State on Monday. Northwestern State holds a 3-4 record prior to playing UConn on Saturday. The Lady Demon’s star player this season has been junior Polina Mutel, who holds a 4-2 record in singles this spring season.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
The Cougars travel north to play Abilene Christian on Friday, March 2 at 10 a.m., before following that with a match against North Texas in Denton, the next day with the contest beginning at noon.
