March 2, 2010
HOUSTON - After a weekend away from competition that followed a 3-1 start to the season, the University of Houston tennis team returns to action a 1 p.m. Wednesday at John E. Hoff Courts when it hosts Southeastern Louisiana.
Wednesday's match will be the last chance Houston fans will have to see the Cougars play on their home courts for an entire month. Following the SLU match, the team will embark on a 10-match road swing before their next home match, which is scheduled for April 3 against Prairie View A&M.
Freshman Bryony Hunter is looking to continue her impressive start to her college career after enjoying a season-opening weekend that saw her post a perfect 3-0 record in singles action. Her impressive play included a pair of wins at the top singles spot.
Along with Hunter, senior Neila Starratt has been solid in singles during her first three appearances this spring. The Bedford, Nova Scotia, native won two of three matches last weekend and dropped her only setback in a split set decision during the Cougars' loss to Northwestern State. Freshman Maja Kazimieruk also emerged as a winner in two of her first three singles matches of the spring.
Following the SLU contest, the Cougars head to Hattiesburg, Miss., for their first action against a Conference USA opponent when they face Southern Miss on Friday. The weekend continues with matches against New Orleans and Alcorn State on Saturday before concluding against UALR on Sunday.
