HOUSTON— The Cougars were big movers this week, as they jumped up six spots to No. 27 in the country, according to the latest ITA rankings released on Tuesday.
For Houston, the national ranking isn’t anything new, as its now been nationally ranked for nine consecutive weeks, while its been the highest placed team in the American for seven straight weeks. At the end of the season, the highest nationally placed team in the American will receive the top seed in conference postseason tournament.
The Cougars are currently enjoying one of their best seasons in school history, as their 16-4 record is the best 20-match start since posting a 17-3 mark back in 2009, while their five wins over ranked opponents this season is already the most in school history.
Freshman sensation Despoina Vogasari also finds her name in the polls for a fifth straight week, as she’s been placed at No. 93 in the latest individual rankings. The Athens, Greece native has posted a 21-6 overall record this season to go along with a 17-3 mark in dual play, while claiming a team-leading four wins over nationally ranked individuals.
With just three matches remaining, the Cougars hope to close out their season strong before they begin American Athletic Conference Tournament play on April 17-20th.
