HOUSTON – The Houston Cougar Women’s Tennis team closes out the regular season with a home match against Stephen F. Austin at 2 p.m., Thursday, at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility.
ABOUT THE COUGARS
Houston enters the regular season finale with a 9-12 overall record after falling in a pair of matches to SMU and USF last weekend.
The Cougars have been led in singles play this season by junior Sveva Mazzari, who holds a 9-7 record during the spring. A pair of freshmen, Tsveta Dimitrova and Lauren Alter, rank second on the squad with eight wins apiece.
Alter and Mazzari have teamed up to be Houston’s top doubles squad, boasting an 8-8 record during the season after picking up a 6-2 victory at the No. 1 doubles position over Juliana Cardoso and Olga Martinez of USF, on Sunday. Dimitrova has teamed with freshman Cristina Rovira and junior Ana Glumac to pick up three wins while playing with each partner.
ABOUT THE LUMBERJACKS
SFA enters the final week of the regular season with an 8-10 record after splitting a pair of matches in a 6-1 win over Incarnate Word and a 7-0 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last weekend. The Lumberjacks will travel to face Central Arkansas on Saturday after meeting the Cougars on Thursday.
SFA has been led in singles play by Liza Aginskaya who has posted an 11-4 record while playing primarily at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions in 2017. Kaja Ljubic and Denise Maxl have each posted nine wins to rank second in solo action.
Ljubic and Aginskaya have teamed to be the Lumberjacks’ top squad in doubles play this season. The duo has posted an 8-2 record at the No. 3 position this year.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
Houston will travel to Orlando, Fla., to compete at the American Athletic Conference Championship from April 19-22. The Cougars will look to improve on their 2016 performance which saw them reach the tournament semifinals.
