PROVIDENCE, R.I.--- The Houston Cougars have been awarded the top seed in the inaugural American Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, the league office announced on Monday.

The conference postseason tournament will begin on Thursday, April 17 and will conclude on Sunday, April 20 in Tampa, Florida, with the winner of the event earning an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, while also being named the league's first-ever champion.

The Cougars will begin their quest for their first postseason berth since 1998 as the tournament's No. 1 seed, due to UH being highest nationally ranked squad (No. 27) in the conference heading into the event according to the ITA.

Houston will receive a first round bye in the tournament, as it will take on either eighth-seeded Cincinnati or ninth-seeded UConn Friday (April 18), at 8:00 a.m. CT in quarterfinal action. The Cougars defeated UConn 4-0 back on March 8, while they've yet to play Cincinnati this season.

If the Cougars are to advance on Friday, they'll take on either No. 4 seed Louisville or fifth-seeded Rutgers in the semifinals, Saturday at 11:00 a.m. CT.

Houston has been placed as the highest ranked team in the conference for seven straight weeks.

The Cougars will conclude the 2014 regular season with a home match against in-state foe Prairie View A&M, Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. CT out at the John E. Hoff Tennis Courts.
