HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team will compete in the 2009 Conference USA Women's Tennis Championship this week. The tournament will be held at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on the campus of crosstown-rival Rice beginning on Thursday. The Cougars head into tournament competition as the fourth seed, granting them a first-round bye. Houston will meet the winner of Thursday's Southern Miss-Rice match at 10 a.m. Friday on the Bank B courts. While UH did not square off the Owls on the courts during the regular season, the two are familiar foes. If the No. 5-seed advances, it will be the fourth consecutive year the Cougars will meet Rice in the C-USA Championship. If Southern Miss, the field's 12th seed, upsets the Owls, it will mark the second time this season the Cougars will face the Golden Eagles. The Cougars opened up C-USA action on Feb. 15 against USM in Natchitoches, La., claiming a 6-1 victory. Houston's Joanna Kacprzyk, who finished the season with a 14-6 record, was a perfect 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles over the weekend, posting a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win at the No. 1 singles match over USM's Stephanie Dellocono. Lynley Wasson earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Zoe Lee in the No. 4 singles position, while freshman Alix Young was a 7-5, 6-4 win over Shannon Rogers at No. 5. Houston was a C-USA Championship quarterfinalist a year ago, finishing fifth in the field, but is one of only a handful of member school who can claim a league team title as the Cougars won the C-USA Championship in 1998.
