IRVING - The University of Houston tennis team found out Tuesday afternoon that it has earned the No. 7 seed and will face crosstown rival Rice Thursday at 2pm in the opening round of the Conference USA Women's Tennis Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the Tulsa campus.

The winner advances to face No. 2 seed SMU Friday at 2pm in the quarterfinals. The Owls defeated Houston in last year's semifinals.

"It should be a great match and is an excellent opportunity for our program to play the defending tournament champions," assistant coach Jo Keene said. "I know our team will be excited about getting a chance to play Rice after what transpired at last year's tournament."

Houston (13-8) has won its last six opening round matches at the C-USA Tournament. The Cougars also have strung together four consecutive semifinal appearances.
