MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Houston women's tennis team enters the 2012 Conference USA Championship as the No. 6 seed and will take on 11th-seeded Southern Miss at 2 p.m., on Thursday at Dunavant-Wellford Tennis Center.

The Cougars recently wrapped up the regular season with dominating road victories over Louisiana Tech and Grambling State to improve to 13-7 overall. Houston enters the tournament having won four-straight matches and seven of the final eight, outscoring its opponents by a 43-6 margin in the seven wins.

With a 13-7 overall record, Houston secured a winning campaign for the 10th-consecutive season and the eighth straight under head coach John Severance.

The Cougars have compiled an 80-40 record in singles play this spring, led by senior Giorgia Pozzan's 15-5 mark primarily at the top position. Junior Maja Kazimieruk has been dominant at the bottom two spots with a 14-4 record while Liselot Koenen (13-7), Celia Fraser (12-7) and Charlotte Phillips (10-9) have also tallied double-digit victories. Junior Bryony Hunter has managed to record an 8-6 mark at the top three positions despite battling injuries.

Doubles play has seen a dramatic improvement this season, as the Cougars have recorded a 37-20 mark (.644) compared to a 36-30 clip (.545) last season. The addition of senior Laura Ring to the roster this season played a huge role for the Cougars, as Ring teamed up with Koenen for an 11-2 record.

The winner of Thursday's match between Houston and Southern Miss (3-18) will face third-seeded and 53rd-ranked Tulane at 2 p.m., on Friday in the quarterfinal round.
