Tennis' Salek Named All-Conference USA First Team and C-USA Newcomer of the Year

May 1, 2007

IRVING - Leila Salek earned an All-Conference USA First-Team selection and C-USA Newcomer of the Year honors Tuesday afternoon as announced by the league office.

"These are a pair of great honors for Leila," head coach John Severance said. "She has a fantastic work ethic and everyday she turned into a better tennis player. It didn't matter where we put her in the lineup. She had a chance to win every match she played. These awards will give her confidence to build on heading into next season."

Salek compiled a 22-7 overall record, which included a 17-5 mark during the spring season. She won five of her six matches against league opponents at the No. 1 singles position with four of those wins having at least one 6-0 set.

The United Kingdom native also headlined Houston by racking up six match-clinching victories and strung together a pair of five-match winning streaks during the season.
