PROVIDENCE -- Houston Cougar Women’s Tennis freshman Tsveta Dimitrova has been named the American Athletic Conference Co-Freshman of the Year, while also garnering All-American Athletic Conference honors, the league office announced Thursday.
“Any time one of our players or our team is recognized by the conference, it’s a great accomplishment,” Head Coach Courtney Steinbock said. “Even with being injured the last five weeks of the season, and not seeing any action, Tsveta was still able to be in the talk for this award, so that is a testament to her capabilities and her future here at Houston. I’m very excited for the future she will have here as a Coog.”
Dimitrova’s stellar rookie season began in the fall where she posted a 7-1 record in three competitions. Her career opened at the Rice Invitational where she won all three of her matches, including a 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory over Christina Sisti of Tulane to win the flight finals. Dimitrova dropped just one set at the Rice Invite and was named American Player of the Month for her efforts.
The Padardzhik, Bulgaria, native continued her strong fall by picking up another flight championship at the SMU Invitational. The freshman advanced to the finals with a win over SMU’s Sarai Monarrez in a 6-3, 6-3 match. For the second-consecutive tournament, Dimitrova dropped just one set in competition in what would be a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 win over Nevada Apollo of Gonzaga in the finals.
In the spring season, Dimitrova opened on a hot streak, winning four of her first five decisions, including a 6-3, 6-0 win over American Conference opponent Naz Karagoz of Tulane. Playing her freshman season at the No. 1 singles position, Dimitrova finished the year on a 4-match winning streak before an injury cut her season short.
Dimitrova finished the spring season with an 8-2 record at the No.1 position and a 15-3 mark overall.
Dimitrova was named Co-Freshman of the Year with Ivone Alvaro from Tulane. She is the second American Conference Freshman of the Year in program history and the first since Despoina Vogasari in 2014.
