MILAN, Italy - Former University of Houston women's tennis standout and current volunteer assistant Giorgia Pozzan has spent the offseason competing in her hometown of Milan, Italy, with Tennis Club Alberto Bonacossa.

Her club, competing in the second highest division in the Italian professional system, Serie "B", recently advanced to the playoffs.

"We all congratulate Georgie for making the playoffs and wish her the best of luck as she tries to get her club back into the Italian `big leagues'," head coach Patrick Sullivan said. "She is a great competitor and is playing at an even higher level today than when she was an all-conference performer for the Coogs. We're very fortunate to have her on our coaching staff and she raises the level of our practices on a daily basis with both her skill and contagious enthusiasm."

Each professional team plays an "andata" in which the teams play against all of their league opponents. In the second half of the season, called "ritorno", each team will plays the same teams in the same order, but at the opposite location. At the end of the season the top two teams are promoted to Serie "A", the country's highest pro league, and the bottom teams are relegated to a lower division.

The club was established in 1893 and has participated in Italy's professional championships since 1929. It is one of only eight founding members of the prestigious "Club de Tennis de Centenaires" (CTC), an association sponsored by the International Olympic Committee whose membership is limited to clubs that have been in existence for over 100 years.

Pozzan transferred to Houston prior to the 2010-11 season and made the most of her two years in the Scarlet and White, posting a dual singles record of 33-12 and overall singles mark of 50-17, ranking third all-time in career winning percentage (74.6).

Pozzan, who ended her career with nearly 100 combined singles and doubles wins (98-38), earned All-Conference USA Second-Team singles honors as a senior in 2012, becoming the first Cougar since 2008 to garner all-league first or second-team accolades.
