Cougars Continue Summer Success
June 10, 2014
HOUSTON--- University of Houston junior Elena Kordolaimi claimed her second international doubles title in a week, while sophomore Rocio Martin helped Club Tenis Coruña capture the Galician Women’s Open Club Championship over the weekend.
Kordolaimi competed as an amateur in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt for the second straight weekend, this time teaming up with Sweden’s Susanne Celik to claim the Jolie Ville Golf F21 Women’s Open doubles title. The tandem defeated Romania’s Elena-Teodora Cadar and Spain’s Arabeia Fernandez Rabener, 7-5, 6-2 in the championship match. Fernandez Rabener is currently ranked 363rd in the world, while Cadar is ranked 552nd.
The tandem blew by the competition, winning four straight matches to claim the title.
Kordolaimi did some damage in singles action as well, making a deep run into the tournament’s quarterfinal round, before dropping a tough 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 decision to Norway’s Caroline Rohde-Moe
Kordolaimi now heads to Alkmaar, Netherlands to take part in the Bowling Victorie Plaza Futures Tournament next week.
Martin also had tremendous success this weekend, as she competed as an amateur and led her club squad to the Galician Women’s Open Club Championship at the Tenis Club de Pontevedra on the Iberian Peninsula.
Martin’s membership with Club Tenis Coruña marks the third straight summer a Cougar has played on a summer club championship squad, as Celia Fraser and Giorgia Pozzan accomplished the feat the previous two summers with their respective squads.
Club tennis is very popular in Europe, as athletes represent the local clubs they grew up playing at, as they participate at the regional and national levels.
Martin will return as a junior on Houston’s 2014 squad, while Kordolaimi will be a senior.
