Women's Tennis Back in Action this Weekend

June 23, 2003

After only seven months on the professional circuit, former University of Houston tennis standout Sarah Borwell will pair with Jane O'Donoghue to compete in the main doubles draw at Wimbeldon this week. Borwell, ranked No. 9 in Great Britian, will compete in her first career grand slam tournament this week.

A native of Middlesbrough, England, and a 2002 graduate of UH, Borwell lost in the Wimbeldon final qualifying round of singles play but will enter the doubles draw unseeded this week. O'Donoghue, ranked No. 4 overall and No. 3 in doubles nationally, will join Borwell against the world's finest on their home turf.

Regarded as one of Houston's finest tennis players, Borwell entered her senior season ranked No. 8 nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. She made two appearances in the NCAA Championship tournament (2000, 2002) and posted a 54-32 singles record in only three full seasons as a Cougar (1998-2002).

Despite missing part of her senior season with mononucleosis, she finished 2002 with a 13-3 record under UH head coach Jennifer Hyde.
