SKILLMAN, N.J.--- The University of Houston Women's Tennis program was named an All-Academic Team for the third consecutive year, while five Cougars claimed ITA Scholar-Athlete status, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced on Thursday.

In addition to the overall team award, graduating senior Celia Fraser received her team-leading third ITA Scholar-Athlete award (2014, 2013, 2012), while fellow graduating seniors Jo Garvey (2014, 2013) and Dionne Sanders (2014, 2012) each earned the honor for the second time in their careers.

Freshman Tina Rupert and sophomore Maria Cardenas each became first time recipients. The five ITA Scholar-Athlete awards are the most UH has ever received in a single season.

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA member program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA, or CA JUCO eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2013 and spring 2014).

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).

Back in May, the Cougars earned the NCAA Public Recognition Award for the third straight season. The honor recognizes programs that have Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores within the top 10 percent of country.
