HOUSTON - Four University of Houston tennis student-athletes competed in the British AEGON Summer County Cup over the past week, where top British players are able to represent their counties in a doubles-only team tennis format.
"Having played in the event many times for Warwickshire, I know what a great experience `County Week' is for a player," Houston assistant coach Jo Keene said. "To see four of our current student-athletes involved for their respective counties is very positive for our program. It is a truly unique and challenging doubles-only event that fosters incredible team spirit and promotes aggressive doubles play on fast grass courts. It mirrors closely the college team dynamic, and so is an excellent week of competition during the summer break."
Celia Fraser, a junior on the Houston squad, teamed up with her partner to post a 9-5 record in doubles play as Warwickshire won its division and will advance to the highly prestigious Division I, held at Devonshire Park, Eastbourne.
Charlotte Phillips also helped lead her county, Nottinghamshire, to a first-place finish in its respective group, posting an 11-1 doubles record with her partner.
Juniors Dionne Sanders and Jo Garvey both competed in the Cheltenham group, as Sanders posted an 0-3 record for first-place Staffordshire and Garvey tallied a 6-3 mark with former Houston standout Joanna Cunliffe for Durham and Cleveland.
The British AEGON Summer County Cup is just the latest event that members of the Houston Tennis program have successfully competed in this summer, as signee Elena Kordolaimi has racked up eight total wins to advance deep into two separate tournaments.
