Women's Tennis Back in Action this Weekend

Sept. 17, 2009

HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team will take part in its first action of its fall season this weekend when the team travels to Stony Brook, N.Y., to take part in exhibition action.

"We are excited about this weekend and getting a chance to see what some of our newcomers can do on the court," head coach John Severance said. "I'm also very optimistic about our doubles potential. This will be a non-traditional tournament and should give us a lot of different experiences that will help us as our season progresses."

The Cougars return four letterwinners from last season's squad that went 18-4 and reached the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Championship. Among the veteran players back is junior Joanna Kacprzyk who put together a 14-6 record last spring on her way to capturing Third Team All-C-USA honors. The lone senior on the roster is Neila Starratt, a three-year letterwinner from Bedford, Nova Scotia. Rounding out the list of returners are junior Laura Ring, who transferred from Texas Tech prior to last season, and sophomore Alix Young.

In addition to the four returners, four newcomers will inject talent and youth into the mix for Severance, who enters his sixth year at the helm of the program, as Bryony Hunter (Essex, U.K.), Elena Kazakova (Moscow, Russia), Maja Kazimieruk (Poznan, Poland) and Alexandra Pickerill (Wicklow, Ireland) join the UH line-up.

Riding the success of the last few seasons and with the talented additions to the roster, Severance expects the team to continue its reputation of excelling in the classroom while working toward the program's goal of consistently appearing in the national rankings.

The Cougars will make just one appearance in Houson this fall, during the Cougar Fall Draw Nov. 6-8.
