Sept. 19, 2013
HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's tennis team opens up the 2013-14 season this weekend when the team will split up to compete at the Marco & Co. Catering Islanders Tennis Open at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Corpus Christi, Texas and the Little Rock Invitational in Little Rock, Ark.
Second-year head coach Patrick Sullivan and the Cougars begin fall tournament play on Friday morning against opponents from Lamar, UTSA, Incarnate Word, Sam Houston State, UTPA, Texas A&M-Kingsville, St. Edwards and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Marco & Co. Catering Islanders Tennis Open.
The tournament will feature singles matches at 9 a.m., and 1 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday while doubles matches will begin at 4 p.m., and 5:30 p.m. on each day. The finals of the tournament will be held at 9 a.m., and 12 p.m. Sunday.
In the Little Rock Invitational, Houston will compete with two doubles teams (Celia Fraser/Elena Kordolaimi and Despoina Vogasari/Maria Andrea Cardenas) against squads from Ole Miss, Memphis, Arkansas, Texas Tech and Oklahoma. All four Cougars will also see singles action in the tournament.
Houston returns six letter-winners from last year's squad. Led by seniors Celia Fraser, Jo Garvey and Dionne Sanders, every member of the returning crew posted a winning record last season. As a team, the Cougars posted a 13-11 overall record in Sullivan's first season marking the 11th straight winning season for the Cougars.
Houston welcomes three newcomers to the courts in 2013 in what was regarded as one of the top signing classes across the country. Freshmen Despoina Vogasari and Tina Rupert and transfer Maria Andrea Cardenas bolster an experienced Cougar roster.
Also joining the program for the 2013-14 season is assistant coach Stephanie Wooten. Wooten comes two Houston after spending her last two seasons at Stephen F. Austin University.
