HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's tennis will split up the squad for the second straight week as they send the team to the Rice Invitational in Houston and the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in Los Angeles, California.

Despoina Vogasari and sophomore Maria Andrea Cardenas were named to the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships Field earlier this month. The duo will become the first Houston tennis players since 2004 (Biljana Dimovska) to compete in the prestigious tournament.

Vogasari earned a spot in the prequalifying singles draw and will have an opportunity to be the first Cougar to qualify for the main draw since Kathy Foxworth in 1987. The freshman from Athens, Greece emerged onto the collegiate tennis scene last week by posting two wins over Top 50 opponents in her first NCAA outing.

Vogasari and Cardenas will also compete as alternates in the doubles draw where they will have the opportunity to qualify for the competition draw as well. Action for the draw in Los Angeles lasts from Sept 28-Oct. 6.

The remaining Cougars (Celia Fraser, Jo Garvey, Elena Kordolami, Rocio Martin Fernandez, Charlotte Phillips, Tina Rupert and Dionne Sanders) will head to Rice University to compete in the Rice Invitational at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium. The draw will run Friday, Sept. 27 to Sunday, Sept. 29.

The Cougars head to Hilton Head, S.C. next week for the Hilton Head 10K Event. The event will be held Sept. 30 to Oct. 3.
