Oct. 15, 2009

Houston, Texas - The University of Houston tennis team will travel to Waco, Texas, Thursday to compete in the ITA Regional, hosted by Baylor.

The tournament will begin with singles qualifying on Friday, and will proceed to the main draw singles and doubles on Saturday. Freshman Bryony Hunter is the only Cougar to gain automatic selection into the main draw.

In the singles qualifying, senior Neila Starratt, junior Elena Kazakova, and freshman Alexandra Pickerill are all in the top half of the draw and will play Friday 9 a.m., while junior Laura Ring will compete Friday at 10:30 a.m., in the bottom half of the draw.

Freshman Maja Kazimieruk is seeded No. 2 in the qualifying draw, with junior Joanna Kacprzyk seeded No. 6, both will begin their play Friday 2:15 p.m.

Last season at the ITA Regional tournament, which took place in Fort Worth, Texas, Joanna Kacprzyk advanced to the main draw through qualifying, and the Warsaw native will be hoping to do the same this year.

The Cougars also have three doubles pairings competing, with Bryony Hunter and Elena Kazakova, Alexandra Pickerill and Laura Ring, and Maja Kazimieruk and Joanna Kacprzyk, lining up together.

The Cougars will complete their fall competition when they return to the John E. Hoff Courts for the Cougar Fall Draw, Nov. 6-8.
