HOUSTON - Senior Neila Starratt emerged victorious in a pair of matches at John E. Hoff Courts Friday to advance to the semifinals of the Flight D bracket following completion of the first day at the 2009 Alonti Cougar Fall Draw.

Starratt, a native of Bedford, Nova Scotia, cruised to a 6-1, 6-4, straight-set victory in her opening match of the day but was tested in her second match-up of the day against Southern Miss' Shannon Rogers. Starratt was able to take the match 6-4, 7-5; advancing to Saturday's semifinal round where she will face Anna Marie Herbold of Tennessee-Martin at 8:30 a.m.

In other action, Houston's Bryony Hunter earned a first round victory during play in Flight A, before falling in round two. Junior Laura Ring was also 1-1 on the day, earning a 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 opening round win over Southeastern Louisiana's Nina Schmied.

Both Hunter and Ring, along with teammate Joanna Kacprzyk who lost in the second round after opening the tournament with a bye, will play matches on Saturday as part of the tournament's consolation round.

The Cougars' Elena Kazakova, Maja Kazimieruk and Alexandra Pickerill also competed on Friday and will be a part of Saturday's doubles competition.
