Kyle Tellez is in his fourth season as the associate head track and field coach at the University of Houston. Tellez was named associate head coach in 1998 after spending seven seasons as an assistant coach at Houston. Since he began coaching Houston's field and multi-events, Tellez has produced two-time NCAA long jump champion Jenny Adams and All-Americans Rhian Clarke, Nick Decker, Ifoma Jones, John Davis, Nathan Labus and Edwina Ammonds. Adams concluded her collegiate career as the 2001 NCAA indoor champion and was the 2000 NCAA outdoor long jump champion in her final collegiate outdoor season. Clarke finished fourth in the pole vault at the 2001 NCAA Indoor Championships, seventh at the 2000 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Decker returns for his senior season in 2001 after finishing fourth at the NCAA Indoor Championships in 2000. He also coached four-time All-American Ifoma Jones, who finished fourth in the heptathlon and seventh in the high jump at the 2000 NCAA Outdoor Championships. She finished fifth in the heptathlon in 1999. She also qualified for the NCAA Championships in the high jump in 1998 and 1999 and the heptathlon in 1998. Davis was fourth in the shot put at the 1999 NCAA Indoor Meet. He also finished fourth in the discus and sixth in the shot put at the 1999 NCAA Outdoors. He was third in the shot put at the 1998 NCAA Indoors and earned All-American honors at the 1998 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the shot put and discus. Labus finished fourth in the pole vault at the 1996 NCAA Indoor Championships, and Ammonds was seventh in the heptathlon at the 1994 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Tellez has tutored several Conference USA men's champions including high jumpers Brooks Bassler, Nick Decker and Jeff Mueller; along with pole vaulters Bill Collins and Mike Brookins. In addition, Davis earned 1997 Conference USA Outdoor Athlete-of-the-Year honors and won C-USA shot put, discus and javelin titles under his direction. Tellez also coached numerous C-USA women's champions that includes throwers Katie Herndon in the 20-lb. weight and shot put, along with Bonnie Aschenbrenner and Chigozie Chuku in the shot put. Jones also won the C-USA high jump and heptathlon, and Denise Darre was the first women's pole vaulting champion under his tutelage. Before Houston began competing in Conference USA in 1997, Tellez also tutored four Southwest Conference champs. Tellez's first conference champion was Ken Bigger, who won two Southwest Conference high jump titles in 1993 and 1994. Ammonds won the SWC heptathlon crown in 1994, and Michael Hoffer was the 1996 SWC decathlon champion. As a collegiate distance runner, Tellez ran for Houston's cross country and track teams in 1984-85. The Fullerton, Calif. native and son of former Houston head coach Tom Tellez is a 1990 graduate of Houston. He and his wife, Stephanie, were married in 1997.
