Cougar Freshman Krystal Ward Earns All-American Honors In Baton Rouge

Baton Rouge, La.- - University of Houston senior Rhian Clarke closed out her collegiate career with a fifth-place finish in the women's pole vault at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Wednesday night.

UCLA's Tracy O'Hara was the NCAA champion with a mark of 13'5 ¼". Andrea Wildrick of Liberty also had a mark of 13' 5 ¼" to finish second and Oregon's Becky Holiday finished third at the same height.

Kathleen Donoghue of Stanford finished fourth with a mark of 13'1 ½" and Clarke finished fifth as she also cleared 13'1 ½".

Freshman Krystal Ward stands in eighth place through the first four events of the heptathlon with 3265 points. Ward opened the day slowly as she was in 15th place following her first event, the 100-meter hurdles, with a time of 14.70 seconds. She bounced back to finish in a four-way tie for first in the women's high jump with a leap of 5'8" to score 891 points. She also tallied 656 points in the women's shot put with a mark of 39' 1 ¼" and 836 points in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.56 seconds.

Houston's 4x100-meter relay was not as fortunate as they failed to make the finals in the women's 4x100-meter relay. The Lady Cougars finished 11th overall in the preliminaries with a time of 44.92 seconds. LSU had the fastest time in the prelims with 43.57 seconds to win the second heat. Southern California won the first heat with a time of 43.79 seconds. Houston finished fifth in the first heat.
