Cougar Freshman Krystal Ward Earns All-American Honors In Baton Rouge


Houston- All-American Jenny Adams and three-time Conference USA champion Jeff Mueller made successful debuts at the Southwest Classic inside the Bill Yeoman Field House on the University of Houston campus.

The University of Texas won both the men's and women's team titles in the two day meet. The Longhorns finishedwith 126 points, while the Lady Longhorns had 120 team points.

Houston finished sixth in the men's division with 43.50 points and the Lady Cougars were seventh with 27 points.

Adams won the women's long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 8 1/2 inches in her first long jump competition this season. She opened the 2001 campaign with a victory in the 60-meter hurdles at the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational on January 12.

Mueller won the men's high jump with a leap of 7 feet, 1/4 inch. In other men's events, freshman Juan Cardenas finished in third place in the mile run with a time of 4:20.96 and sophomore Robert Foster finished fourth in the 60 meters in a time of 6.87 seconds.

Vanessa Zavaletta finished third in the women's weight throw with a toss of 49 feet, 11 1/4 inches, and Kim Stallman also finished third in the women's pole vault with a mark of 11 feet, 5 3/4 inches. Lauren Smith finished fourth in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.59 seconds, while Heather Howse finished fourth in the women's 5,000 meter run with a time of 18:27.88.

Houston will compete in the Houston Indoor Invitational next Saturday at the Bill Yeoman Field House. The meet will begin at 9:00 a.m.
