This Week
The University of Houston men's and women's track and field teams will host the Tom Tellez Invitational Track and Field Meet on Saturday, March 30, at the Lewis/Tellez Complex behind UH's Athletics/Alumni Center.

Houston will be competing against men's and women's teams from Baylor, LSU and Texas A&M. In addition the men's squad from Texas a limited squad from Syracuse also will be competing. The meet will begin with field events at 11:00 a.m. and running events will star at 1:00 p.m.

Head Coach
Leroy Burrell was named the Conference USA women's indoor track and field Coach of the Year in 2002 after leading Houston to its second C-USA Indoor Championship. He also was named the C-USA women's outdoor track and field Coach of the Year in 2000 after leading Houston to the team championship.

Burrell, who is in his third season as the head men's and women's track and field coach at Houston, also was named the C-USA indoor and outdoor men's track and field Coach Of The Year in 1999 and 2000 after leading the Cougars to four team titles. He began his coaching career after a world-class track career as a sprinter and long jumper. Burrell was a nine-time All-American at Houston, a two-time Olympian, held the world record in the 100 meters twice and was ranked as the world's top 100-meter sprinter in 1990 and 1991.

Last Meet
The University of Houston women's track and field team had a second-place finish at the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas on March 23. The Lady Cougars claimed two individual titles and had six second-place finishes to score 110 points.

Shayla Bowman won the women's hammer throw with a mark of 136 feet, 6 inches, and Julie Perez won the women's 3000-meter steeplechase in 11:01.68.

Sean Clayton won the men's triple jump with a leap of 49 feet, 9 ¼ inches and the Cougars had four second-place finishes in the men's division.

All-American Rhian Clarke finished second in the women's pole vault with a mark of 13 feet, 3 ½ inches, while Lauren Smith finished second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.56 seconds.

Alicia Cave also was second in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:01.55 and was fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.77 seconds. Houston's 4x100-meter relay was second in a time of 45.46 seconds.

In the women's field events, Briana Bassler placed second in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 4 ½ inches. Tinisha Wesley also was second in the shot put with a mark of 43 feet, 11 ¼ inches and Allie Booker was second in the discus with a throw of 137 feet, 6 inches.

Texas won the women's team title with 169 points, while UT-San Antonio was third with 88 points and Texas A&M was fourth with 83 points.

In the men's division, Greg Christie made his 2002 season debut with a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles as he finished the race in 53.97 seconds. Milton Manson was second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.24 seconds.

Brandon Bray was second in the men's long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 9 inches and finished just ahead of teammate Jason Edwards, who was third with a wind-aided mark of 23 feet, 2 ¾ inches. Adam Callahan was second in the men's high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 9 ¾ inches.

Texas also won the men's team title with 168 points. Texas A&M was second with 119.50 points. Texas Tech was third with 113 points, while Houston was fourth with 101 points and UT-San Antonio was fifth with 24.50 points.

Next Meet
Following the Tom Tellez Invitational, Houston will return to Austin, Texas for the second time in three weeks and compete in the Texas Relays on April 3-6.
