Reyna and Rzepecki Post Top Five Finishes at Texas Relays, Herrmann Finishes Eighth in Decathlon
AUSTIN, Texas -- Monica Reyna finished third in the women's 10,000 meter run and Jackie Rzepecki finished fifth in the women's 3,000 meter run at the 74th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Thursday, April 5, 2001, in Austin.
Reyna completed the 10,000 meters with a career-best time of 38:40.37. Her time bettered her previous career-best time by nearly two minutes. Her previous career-best entering this season was 40:37.61 at the 2000 Conference USA Championships. Rzepecki posted a time of 10:07.80 in the 3,000 meter run to finish in fifth place after winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase at Houston's Tom Tellez Invitational to earn Conference USA women's track and field Athlete-of-the-Week. In the men's decathlon, Alex Herrmann finished in eighth place with 6,844 points. Herrmann began the day in ninth place, but moved up one spot on the second day of competition. This also marked the first time that Herrmann has competed in a decathlon this season. Lauren Smith and LaToya Reed also competed in the women's 400-meter hurdles. Smith ran in the fourth heat of the preliminaries and finished fourth in the heat with a time of 1:01.67. Reed was also fourth in the ninth heat with a time of 1:08.05. In addition, Houston also competed in the men's 4x800-meter relay and the Cougars finished 14th with a time of 7:57.34.
