Glover Becomes Third Lady Cougar To Earn Spot On U.S. Olympic Team
HOUSTON (July 17) - Sandra Glover became the third former University of Houston track and field star to earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team when she won the 400-meter hurdles at the US Olympic Trials in a meet record time of 53.33 seconds.
Glover, who was a teammate of current UH head coach Leroy Burrell was favored coming into the race after posting the fastest time in the semifinals when she completed the race in 53.87 seconds despite pulling up in the final stretch. A second-grade school teacher in Houston, Glover was the Southwest Conference 100 and 400-meter hurdles champion in 1991 while competing at UH. She also set the school record that season with a time of 56.97 seconds. In the finals, Glover beat world record holder Kim Batten, who finished second in a time of 54.70, and Tonia Buford-Bailey, who was third in 54.80 seconds. Glover, Batteen and Buford-Bailey will compete for the United States at the Olympic Games in Sidney, Australia on September 15-October 1. Glover joins two other former Lady Cougars on the USA team. Dawn Burrell, the younger sister of UH head coach Leroy Burrell, will compete in the long jump for the United States, while Michelle Collins will run in the 400 meters. Burrell finished second in the long jump at the U.S. Olympic Trials with a leap of 22 feet, 10 1/2 inches, while Collins finished third in the 400 meters in a time of 50.29 seconds. |
