Volleyball notches first win of 2003 season at Baylor Classic

Waco, Texas - The University of Houston volleyball team kicked off the 2003 season Friday splitting their first two matches of the Baylor Classic in Waco.
The Cougars started the day with a 3-1 win over the Wyoming Cowgirls. The Cougars closed out their first day with a 3-1 loss to Baylor. The Bears topped Houston 3-1, beating the COugars for only the second time in 33 matches.
Freshman Kelly McAnelly led Houston in the opening game of the tournament with 22 kills while fellow freshman Becca Sartori added 13 kills. Junior transfer Cinthia Piva totaled 11 kills and 13 digs, sophomore Jaci Gonzalez had 16 digs while junior Mirela Vasconcellos and freshman Lauren Grover passed out 23 assists a piece.
Wyoming took game one 30-19, but the Cougars bounced back to close out the match 30-28, 30-21, 30-21.
In the nightcap, Houston dropped the first two games 30-28, 30-23 before winning game three 30-27. Baylor finished the match with a 30-18 win, leaving the Cougars 1-1 on the season.
Freshman again led the way for Houston against Baylor with McAnelly and Sartori totaling 18 and 11 kills respectively.
The Cougars will be in action again Saturday when they take on the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners (0-1) at 5 p.m.
