WACO - Justine Farmer matched a career-high, smacking 24 kills along with 13 digs, as the University of Houston volleyball team defeated Arkansas-Little Rock 3-1 (30-18, 30-25, 21-30, 30-20) Friday afternoon in the opening game of the Clarion Invitational on the Baylor campus. The victory for the Cougars was No. 400 for head coach Bill Walton in his 21 seasons at Houston. He joins former basketball coach Guy V. Lewis and current baseball manager Rayner Noble as the only Cougar coaches to win 400 games while at Houston. Farmer, along with Kelly McAnelly and Kelsey King, notched double-doubles for the Cougars. McAnelly contributed 18 kills and moved passed Nashika Stokes (1993-96) for the No. 8 spot in program history. The Houston native now has 1,162 career kills and is six kills away from equaling Michelle Frazier (1997-2000) for the No. 7 slot. With 51 attempts, McAnelly leaped passed Emily Leffers (1993-94, 1996-97) and Jennifer Wittenburg (1999-2001) for the No. 2 position all-time. King, the reigning Conference USA Co-Setter of the Week, passed out a match-best 57 assists and added 13 digs for her first career double-double at Houston. It was the third time in four matches that King has eclipsed the 50-assist mark.
Becca Sartori powered home 17 kills on a .424 percentage and added four blocks, while Ashley Calhoun pulled in 21 digs, surpassing the 20-dig mark for the first time in her young career. Calhoun was joined on the back row by Millicent Martin, who reeled 16 digs in addition to six kills and six assists. Amila Barakovic paced UALR with 12 kills and 14 digs. Ivanka Davidova and Anita Bucar chipped in 11 kills apiece for the Trojans. The Cougars (3-1) raced out to an early 19-9 lead in the opening game and never looked back, claiming a 30-18 win. Farmer smacked seven kills in the frame as Houston hit for a .375 percentage. UH held an early 13-7 advantage to start game two, but UALR (2-4) trimmed the deficit down to 19-18 on an Anelia Petrove kill. The Cougars put together five consecutive points on Martin's serve pushing the cushion back to six, 24-18. Houston held on for a 30-25 victory. The Trojans came out of the locker room scoring eight of the first 11 points of game three. Houston cut the deficit down to four points on five separate occasions, but UALR won a 30-21 decision forcing game four. The fourth game started with six ties and four lead changes. Sartori and Farmer teamed for a block that swung the momentum in favor of the Cougars at 14-13. Houston got three kills from Sartori to hold a 19-18 advantage before closing out the match on an 11-2 spurt, including a seven-point stretch on King's serve. The Cougars return to the hardwood later this afternoon against New Mexico. First serve against the Lobos is slated for 2:30pm. Live stats are available on UHCougars.com
