HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Volleyball team defeated Texas Southern, 3-1 (25-15, 25-18, 23-25, 25-13), but fell to Idaho State, 3-1 (24-26, 20-25, 25-15, 21-25), as part of the Houston Cougar Classic on Friday inside Athletics/Alumni Center.

The Cougars (3-2) will look to bounce back in the tournament finale, facing Lamar on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. All attendees will receive free admission as part of "Fan Appreciation Day" from the team.

Four Cougars recorded double-figure kills, paced by a career-high 18 from junior outside hitter Sarah Afflerbaugh. Freshman outside hitter Megan Duncan also turned a career-high landing 15 kills, while Chenelle Walker and Brianna Lynch followed with 11 and 10 kills, respectfully.

Houston hit .304 as a team across the four-set match, the team's second highest offensive output of the season.

Setters Keandra McCardell and Katie Krebs proved a stout one-two punch in captaining the offense, amassing 29 and 25 assists, and freshman libero Katie Karbo turned in a match-high 19 digs.

The Cougars cruised through the first two sets, taking 25-15 and 25-18 decisions behind .500 and .342 clips. However, the offense stalled in the third set, as the Lady Tigers picked up a 25-23 edging to extend the match.

In the fourth set, Houston kicked back into high gear and swung a .455 mark en route to the 25-13 victory and 3-1 final.

With the win, the Cougars improve to 3-2 all-time in home openers under head coach Kaddie Platt. Platt, who has won her last three home openers with Houston, improves to 17-5 all-time in home-opening matches across her career.

Lynch and Walker led Houston in the nightcap, each finishing with 10 kills against the Bengals. Duncan followed closely with nine kills, adding 11 digs.

Karbo led all with 18 digs. McCardell finished with 27 assists and Krebs finished with 19.

Idaho State got 10 kills from Abby Jensen and nine from Chloe Hirst across the first two sets, picking up 26-24 and 25-10 victories.

The Cougars rallied out of the break and turned in a match-high .538 attack percentage, committing just one error, to rally back for a 25-15 win in set three, but later fell 25-21 in the fourth set to suffer their first loss at home in 2016.
