Tucson, Ariz. - Despite double-digit kills from Kinsey Cave and Amanda Carson, the University of Houston volleyball team came up short, 3-2 (16-25, 25-23, 25-23, 21-25, 15-9), against Nevada in their final match at the Wildcat Classic.

Cave recorded a team-high 17 kills, while adding two digs and a block. Carson added to the team total with 11 kills and 18 digs for her second double-double this season. Tara Roenicke recorded the first double-double of her career with her 40 assists and 12 digs.

Nevada jumped out 5-0 on the Cougars to open the match. They went on to extended their lead to seven, 11-4, before head coach Bill Walton called his first timeout. UH was able to pull with four, 20-16, out of the break but it wouldn't be enough and the Cougars would drop the first set.

The two teams battled tough in the second set, a set in which there were 17 tie games and Houston's 9-6 lead was the largest of the set. This time Houston got on the board first and never looked back. Cave, Jasmine Terry and Chandace Tryon aided the effort by recording three kills apiece.

Houston played from behind in the third set, after allowing the Wolfpack to take an opening 4-0 lead. This time, however, Houston battled hard and eventually took an 11-10 lead. The set was another close battle but UH prevailed for the 25-23 win.

With the match 2-1 in their favor, Houston only had to win the fourth set and the match would be theirs. Nevada had other plans. UH held the lead until the Wolfpack knotted it up at 18-18. They took the lead, 22-18, on three Nevada kills and a Houston attack error and held on for the win, 25-21, forcing a fifth set.

Houston would need the fifth set for the first time this season, looking to ensure a win. They fell behind 6-1 in the early going and the Wolfpack held on for the 15-9 win.

Houston falls to 1-6 on the season and 1-2 all-time against the Wolfpack.

For her play at the Wildcat Classic, Cave was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Houston continues its month-long road stand on at the Loyola Marymount Crowne Plaza LAX Tournament on Sept. 11-12. The Cougars opens tournament play at 9 p.m. on Sept. 11 against Loyola Marymount. They will play two games on Sept. 12 against UC Irvine and Boise State at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
