Final Stats

HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston volleyball team improved its record to 5-0, defeating Texas Christian University (4-1) in a non-conference match in the first day of the Crowne Plaza/Rice Invitational.

The Cougars, who were 16-11 last year, dominated the TCU Horned Frogs in three games 30-20, 30-25 and 30-20. UH outscored TCU at the net, hitting .315 percent as a team over TCU's .122 average. UH took an early lead in the first game and then went on a six point rally to win. After three early errors, UH took came back from 9-11 and rallied to 17-11 in the second game. The Cougars then capitalized on the Horned Frogs' hitting errors for a quick win in the third.

All-Conference USA Preseason Team selection Jenny Tanneberger led the Cougars with 18 kills and five blocks. Outside hitters Jane Anne Karasek and Laura Koster added 15 and 13 kills, respectively.

Senior setter Donna Sellen also had a solid match, contributing 43 assists, seven digs, four kills and two service aces. Freshman libero Jaci Gonzalez led the Cougar defense with 17 digs for a five-match total of 84.

Competition will continue tomorrow as the Cougars battle Louisiana-Lafayette at noon and host Rice at 6 p.m. in the final day of the Crowne Plaza/Rice Invitational. After last week's Cougar football and soccer victories, the volleyball squad is looking to gain more bragging rights in winning the trifecta against their cross-town rivals.
