HOW IT HAPPENED
After a kill from senior middle blocker Brianna Gardner opened the match, sophomore Megan Duncan recorded four kills on her first four swings to fuel Houston to an early 8-2 lead. The Cougars went on to lead by as much as 10 points in claiming their opening set on their home court.
Despite 11 kills between seniors Brianna Lynch (6) and Sarah Afflerbaugh (5), the Hatters flipped the script in the second set, never trailing en route to 25-22 win to even the match at one set apiece heading into intermission.
The Brianna tandem of Lynch and Gardner carried Houston to a 25-19 third-set victory. Lynch highlighted a match-high .387-team attack with five kills, while Gardner combined for four blocks.
The fourth set proved to be the most contested, as the two teams swapped the lead four times and pulled even at eight different points. Tied 23-23, the Cougars capitalized on an attack error into the net by Stetson to claim the advantage before Gardner and freshman Gabi Zelaya combined for a block to seal the set, 25-23.
