Volleyball Defeats Arkansas 3-2; Claims Third Place At Tournament
Sept. 8, 2001 Manhattan, KS - The University of Houston volleyball team defeated Arkansas three games to two to claim third place at the Wildcat Classic Tournament Saturday (Sept. 8) in Manhattan, Kansas. Houston senior hitter Jennifer Wittenburg was named to the all-tournament team. With the 33-31, 20-30, 30-25, 25-30, 15-10 win over the Razorbacks Houston improved its record to 3-4 on the season. In the early match on Saturday the Cougars were defeated by No. 22 ranked Kansas State three games to one. For three matches in the weekend tournament Wittenburg averaged 5.2 kills and 3.8 defensive digs per game. She hit for a composite .215 percentage with seven blocks and six service aces. The Cougars also had steady play from junior Jane Anne Karasek who averaged 3.6 kills and 2.9 digs per game. The standout from Caldwell, Texas, hit for a combined .231 percentage with six blocks and three service aces. UH will next meet undefeated Montana State at the University Centre Invitational tournament in Gainesville, Florida, on Friday, September 14. The Cougars will also face UConn and tournament host Florida next weekend.
