Volleyball Splits Matches at Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational

Austin, Texas -- The University of Houston volleyball team split two matches in the final day of competition at the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational on Friday. Houston defeated Texas State 3-2 and lost to No. 3 Texas 3-0. The Cougars snapped a four match losing streak in the final match of the day on Friday with a win over the Bobcats, improving to 4-5 on the season. They won the match with scores of 19-25, 25-23, 25-17, 19-25 and 15-13. Houston is now 24-3 all-time against Texas State UH was led in the match by freshman Ingrida Zauere. The Kuldiga, Latvia native recorded the second double-double of her career with 23 kills and 17 digs. Seniors Kelsey King and Justine Farmer each had a double-double in the win. After Texas State took the first match, Houston responded to win the second set by just two points. The Cougars would take the lead in the match by winning the third set but the Bobcats were not about to let them win in four. Houston was forced to play their fourth five-set match this season and their second in two days. The Cougars were able to hold on this time and win the match. UH is 1-3 this season in five-set matches. Houston 0, Texas 3 The Cougars never led or tied in the first two sets but through the two sets senior Justine Farmer led the Cougars with nine kills while Zauere had six. In the final set of the match, UH was able to hold the lead two times during play and were within two, 12-10, midway through the set. They were unable to hang on against the third-ranked team on their home court and the Longhorns held on for the win. Houston is now 16-42 all-time against Texas. For her play during the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational, Zauere was named to the All-Tournament Team. Up Next Following the mid-week match, Houston will welcome Stephen F. Austin, Loyola Marymount and Arizona in the Flo Hyman Invitational on Sept. 19-20.
