HOUSTON, Texas -- The University of Houston Volleyball program swept Prairie View A&M (25-16, 25-21, 25-20) on Wednesday night inside Athletics/Alumni Center.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 4-3 on the season, while the Lady Panthers fall to 0-3. The win also puts Houston above .500 for the first time on the season and caps a four-match homestand in which the squad went 3-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cougars quickly built to a 9-2 advantage, going on to lead by as much as 10 points, as the team never trailed in cruising to a 25-16 opening-set victory. Seniors Sarah Afflerbaugh and Brianna Gardner each recorded five kills, while senior Brianna Lynch was perfect with three kills on three swings.
The Lady Panthers took a 2-0 lead to open the second set, but Houston quickly rallied with a 5-0 run to take the upper hand. Later leading 16-15, the Cougars were able to outlast the PVAMU 9-6 down the stretch to claim a 25-21 win to hold a 2-0 lead at intermission.
The Lady Panthers held a 4-3 lead early in the third set. However, sophomore outside hitter Megan Duncan led a 4-0 run with two kills and joined Gardner for a tandem block to put the Cougars up 7-5. Houston never trailed the rest of the way en route to a 25-20 decision to seal its second sweep of the season.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Duncan led Houston with 10 kills, eclipsing double figures on the final point of the match.
Afflerbaugh and Gardner recorded nine kills, respectively. Afflerbaugh also recorded 10 digs.
Freshman setter Abby Irvine finished with 18 assists and seven digs.
Redshirt junior Chenelle Walker totaled four blocks (one solo, three assisted).
Defensively, libero Katie Karbo recorded a match-high 21 digs, her fifth time to lead all players in digs on the season.
The Cougars recorded seven blocks as a team.
Houston outhit the Lady Panthers, .236-.105.
Redshirt freshman Kayla Weixelman made her collegiate debut with an appearance via a substitution in the third set.
The Cougars will close their non-conference schedule and open a three-match road swing with a visit to LSU on Saturday. Following the trip to the Bayou State, Houston will open American Athletic Conference play with trips to Tulsa (Sept. 22) and SMU (Sept. 24).
