Final Stats

Houston, Texas - Trailing 8-6 in the fifth and deciding game, the University of Houston's women's volleyball team needed a lift. Whatever Head Coach Bill Walton told his team during the mini-break seemed to do the trick.

After switching benches with their opponents, the Cougars roared back to score seven of the game's next eight points and take control of the match. UH then held off a late rally to take a 3-2 win over Tulane on Friday at Hofheinz Pavilion.

The win was the Conference USA season opener for both teams and marked the seventh straight season that the Cougars opened 1-0 in league play.

Jennifer Wittenburg led the way for UH with a match-high 24 kills and added 13 digs for her 18th career double-double. Jane Anne Karasek added 19 kills, with Jenny Tanneberger contributing 15 kills. Gabi Carbone led all players with 18 digs to spearhead the UH defensive attack.

After falling 30-28 in game one, UH rallied to take the next two games easily by double-digit margins. In game four, the Cougars rallied from a 24-18 deficit during one stretch to tie the game at 25 but fell just short by a 30-28 margin to set up the deciding fifth game.

There won't be any rest for the Cougars, though, as they head east to meet Conference USA rival Memphis in a 2 p.m. match Sunday in Memphis, Tenn.
