Final Stats

Memphis, Tenn. - Senior outside hitter Jennifer Wittenburg blasted 31 kills as the University of Houston women's volleyball team outlasted Memphis 3-2 in a Conference USA match Sunday in Memphis, Tenn.

It was the second consecutive win for the Cougars (5-5, 2-0 C-USA), who also defeated Memphis for the fifth straight match. In addition, UH snapped the Tigers' 10-match winning streak to open the season and improved to 2-0 in league play for the fifth consecutive season.

Wittenburg posted her second 30-kill performance of the week after posting 31 kills against nationally-ranked Texas A&M on Tuesday in the Cougars' home opener. It was also the seventh 30-kill effort of her UH career.

After dropping the first game 30-27, UH rallied to take the next two games, including a 30-15 thumping of the Tigers in game three. Memphis rallied to tie the match with a 30-26 victory in game four, but the Cougars claimed game five by a 15-13 margin to seal the match.

Jane Anne Karasek added 18 kills, while Jenny Tanneberger chipped in with 16 kills and a .480 attack percentage featuring only four errors in 25 chances. On the defensive front, Gabi Carbone tallied 21 digs to lead all players.

Ginger Garrett lead Memphis (10-1, 1-1 C-USA) with 17 kills with Adrianne Edmonds recording a team-best 17 digs.

The Cougars will now take a few days off from the court before they hit the road again to meet Cincinnati at 7 p.m. Thursday. From there, UH wraps up its road swing with a 2 p.m. showdown Sunday at Louisville
