Volleyball Defeats Southern Miss, Move to 3-0 in C-USA

HOUSTON -- The University of Houston volleyball team defeated Southern Miss Sunday afternoon extending their win streak to five and three straight in Conference USA action. The Cougars defeated the Golden Eagles in four games with scores of 28-30, 30-25, 30-26, and 30-22 at the Athletics/Alumni Center. Junior Justine Farmer recorded a career-high 36 kills in the winning effort and added 21 digs for her ninth double-double this season. Houston (8-6, 3-0 C-USA) moves to 15-2 in the all-time series against the Golden Eagles. This is also the first time since 2000 that the Cougars have started 3-0 in C-USA play. Houston dropped a close game one despite a late comeback. Southern Miss stretched their lead to 26-20 but Houston would get within one, 27-29, but it wasn't enough to hold off the Golden Eagles. Junior Justine Farmer added six kills and freshman Hannah Sullivan had six digs in game one. The Cougars took the lead back winning games two and three behind Farmer's 19 kills and just three errors with a hitting percentage of .381. UH once again had to come from behind but this time the game ended in their favor. The Cougars ended the match with a 30-22 win in game four behind Farmer's 11 kills and 10 digs.
The Cougars will continue conference play Sept. 27 at 7 pm when they travel across town to face Rice. Following Thursday's match, the Cougars have the week off before two weekend matches on Oct. 5 and Oct. 7 at Tulsa and SMU, respectively. |
