NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - A three-set sweep in the first conference match of the season snaps a six-match skid for the University of Houston volleyball team as they defeat Rutgers University, 25-21, 26-24, 25-15, Friday evening.
The Cougars improve to 8-7 picking up their first win of The American Athletic Conference, while Rutgers falls to 4-11, 0-1 The American.
Houston started with a near perfect first set, committing only four attacking errors while Rutgers had 10.
Rutgers held on to the lead through most of set two. Houston called a timeout trailing 12-17. From there, the Cougars went on a 10-5 run to tie the set at 22. Back-to-back kills by Kadi Kullerkann put Houston ahead 25-24. Sarita Mikals sealed the win, 26-24, with her fifth kill of the set.
Three Cougars recorded double figure kills. Emily Howard led the Cougars with 12 kills on 17 attempts, one error (.647) and a solo block. Kullerkann and Mikals followed with 11 kills (.500) and 10 kills, respectively.
Houston hits the court again Sunday in Storrs, Conn. for the second match of the conference season. The Cougars take on UConn at 2 p.m./1 p.m. CST. The squad returns home next weekend for two conference matches against Cincinnati and Louisville.
