HOUSTON - In a battle to stay undefeated, the University of Houston volleyball team fell in a heartbreaker to the University of Louisville in three sets (19-25, 24-26, 16-25) Sunday afternoon at the Athletics/Alumni Center.
The Cougars (10-8, 3-1) led for the first half of set one, allowing Louisville (8-6, 4-0) to tie the game six times but only taking over at the end. Houston led 13-9 when the Cardinals used their first timeout of the set. Houston was hitting .800 at the time. Louisville came back on a 10-4 run.
In the second set, both teams rallied point-for-point. Houston forced the set into extra points ending 24-26 going into intermission.
The Cardinals took the third set blocking out Houston, forcing 10 hitting errors by the Cougars.
Freshman Sarita Mikals led Houston as she recorded her sixth double double of the season with 12 kills and 13 digs.
Louisville's Maya McClendon recorded 15 kills and 16 digs against Houston. Middle Randi Ewing had 10 kills in 11 attempts against the Cougars, a .909 hitting percentage.
Houston continues conference play on the road as they face Temple Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. followed by a Sunday match at Memphis beginning at 1 p.m.
