HOUSTON -- The University of Houston volleyball team rallied in the third set, but would come up short, dropping its Conference USA match to UTEP, 3-0, on Sunday in the Athletics/Alumni Center.
Houston senior Katie Norris led the Cougars with 13 kills on 52 attacks, but it wasn't enough as the Minors produced a .287 attacking day on 45 kills and just 12 errors. Following Norris in kills for the Cougars were senior Chandace Tryon with six and freshman Emily Howard with five. Senior setter Abby Simmons paced the offensive attack with 27 assists.
Defensively, Houston was led by sophomore Natalie Keck's 17 digs, while freshman Olivia O'Dell finished with eight. Houston out blocked the Minors with eight, led by Norris, Tryon and Howard with two block assists apiece.
Houston falls to 4-13 overall and 3-4 in Conference USA action, while UTEP improved to 11-8 and 5-2.

SET 1: UTEP 25, Houston 19
After taking a 2-0 lead, Houston allowed UTEP to answer back with six straight points to take over the lead at 7-2. Tryon had back-to-back kills for the Cougars midway through the set, but the UTEP stayed solid offensively, tallying 15 kills for a .361 attacking percentage to Houston's 13 kills and .125 percentage. The Cougars made it a three-point game at 19-16 on a Howard kill, but the Minors finished on a 6-3 run to go up 1-0.
SET 2: UTEP 25, Houston 20
UTEP gained a 4-1 lead on Houston after scoring three straight in the early going. The Cougars began to answer the Minors' points to narrow the score to two at 15-13, following kills by Howard and Norris. UTEP then responded with three unanswered points to go back up 18-13. Despite a late rally by Houston with two kills by Howard, the Cougars weren't able to make up the deficit that occurred early in the set, falling by just five.
SET 3: UTEP 25, Houston 16
Back and forth to open the set, Houston stayed within four of UTEP, but the Minors broke loose with a 10-1 run to go up 23-9. Despite seeing a 14-point deficit, the Cougars stayed composed and put together a 7-1 run to make it a 24-16 game, before UTEP finished with a final kill.
Houston will return to action on the road at East Carolina on Friday, Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. Following that match, the Cougars will return home to host Marshall on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 1 p.m.
