Tanneberger Posts 41 Kills in 3-2 Loss to Saint Louis
Oct. 12, 2002 ST. LOUIS - The University of Houston volleyball team fell to Saint Louis 3-2 tonight in a conference match at the Baumhardt-Eberhardt Center. Senior middle hitter Jenny Tanneberger (San Antonio-Univ. of Texas) posted 41 kills on the night to set a school record and tie the Conference USA mark. The loss ends the Cougars' four match win streak and marks the middle of their regular-season schedule. Despite Tanneberger's 41 kills, nine digs, and four blocks assists, the Cougars (11-5, 2-1 C-USA) could not rally back in the games four and five to upend the Billikens (14-6, 4-0 C-USA). Houston came back from a 2-0 deficit last night to defeat Memphis 3-2 on the road. Tanneberger's 41-kill performance surpasses the 37-kill mark set by Lilly Denoon on November 13, 1994, and Jennifer Wittenburg on November 9 and 10, 2001, setting a new Houston record. She has also tied the C-USA record with South Florida's Michelle Collier and Saint Louis' Colleen Hunter (who posted 30 kills in tonight's contest) for the most kills in a match. Middle hitter Loure Dews (Houston-Brazoswood H.S.) and outside hitter Jane Anne Karasek (Caldwell-Caldwell H.S.) each added 13 kills in the effort. Karasek also led the Cougar defense with 19 digs, while defensive specialists Ali Roberts (Orem, UT-Mountainview H.S.) and Jaci Gonzalez (San Antonio-Sandra Day O'Connor H.S.) posted 12 and 11 digs, respectively. Action returns to Hofheinz Pavilion on Oct. 17 when Houston takes on cross-town rival Rice at 7:30 p.m. in a non-conference match. The Cougars also host TCU in a C-USA battle Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m.
