GREENVILLE, N.C. — The University of Houston volleyball team used a balanced offensive and defensive effort to secure a 3-0 sweep over East Carolina for its first road sweep of the year on Friday evening in Conference USA action.

With the win, the Cougars improved to 4-4 in conference play and 5-13 overall. Houston has now won three of its last four games and four of its last six, including its second-straight road win.

Houston totaled 44 kills and notched a .294 attacking percentage, which included a sharp-hitting set two that featured 17 kills and just three errors on 30 attempts for a .467 percentage. Senior Katie Norris led the offensive attack with 16 kills for her 15 double-digit kill game this season. Senior Chandace Tryon and sophomore Kaiti Waters followed with 10 and eight kills, respectively. Senior setter Abby Simmons paced the offense with 39 assists.

Defensively, Houston freshman Olivia O’Dell tallied 10 digs for a team-high, followed by Simmons with eight. Along the net, Houston posted 10 block assists and four block solos, led by Tryon with three block assists and two block solos.

“I was pleased with the way our team played in sets one and two,” head coach Kaddie Platt said. “We set the pace early in the match with solid, smart attacking and tough serving. It was nice to pick up another road win and we look to continue that into Sunday’s home match with Marshall.”

    SET 1: Houston 25, East Carolina 20
Houston jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead on two kills by freshman Emily Howard and one by Tryon. ECU rallied with a 5-1 run take over the lead at 7-6. Up two at 12-10, Norris struck for a dominant showing around the net with three kills in the next four match points to give the Cougars a 14-10 lead. ECU fought back once again to make it a one-point game at 15-14, but Houston would go on to use a 5-1 run to go up by five at 20-15. Four unanswered points by the Pirates quickly narrowed Houston’s lead to one before the Cougars wrapped up the set on three final kills.

    SET 2: Houston 25, East Carolina 13
The Cougars went up 6-1 on kills by Howard, Norris and Tryon. Holding a convincing 18-10 lead, Houston went on to extend its lead by 12 with a 22-10 lead and closed out the set with two kills by Waters for a 2-0 lead.

    SET 3: Houston 28, East Carolina 26
Tied 16 times, both teams would exchange points throughout the entire set. A Norris kill broke the tie at 14-13 and Houston managed to hold a lead until ECU came back to tie it at 18-18. From there, neither team was able to gain any lead on one another until the Cougars took advantage of two final attacking errors by the Pirates to earn the sweep.
